How to you feel about a Foto Friday?

I took my daughters downtown last weekend for a photo shoot and I would love to share some of those photographs with you. What better way then to launch a new segment?

I decided to let the girls chose their own poses since that's when their true personality shines. The shot below was the first one I took during the actual photo shoot (I took many more on out way to the wall), it turned out a bit blurry but I can't get over the poses they chose :) They are The Dancing Diva's after all!!

The photo below is the above part of the wall that didn't make into the photographs. (My girls were too short to have the dragon in their pictures) I chose this wall for our shoot because of the bright colors and who could overlook the HUGE dragon that stretched across the top of the brick wall?! Isn't is amazing? Such a wonderful art piece!

Being able to walk around downtown and find beautiful pieces of art painted on the buildings is one of the wonderful things about Asheville, NC! We believe that artists need to be seen and many local business have even hired local artist to turn their outside walls into one of a kind art pieces, some even have the store name and even a product or two :) You can even find murals that tell a story about history. They are all simply breathtaking!

Plan Your Trip to Gatlinburg

The Great Smoky Mountains is such a beautiful area in America. Visitors get the chance to explore, learn and experience a different way of living. The gateway into the Great Smoky Mountains is the spectacular community of Gatlinburg, Tennessee. With the many recycling methods that is offered throughout Gatlinburg, including a State-of-the-art composting plant and wonderful recycling center, up to 70% of municipal waste that is collected in the area does not find it's way into a landfill! Being the welcoming community of Great Smoky Mountains, Gatlinburg holds the task of preserving and protecting the wildlife and everything surrounding it. Even their annual Winter Magic Holiday Celebration of Lights has went green bu switching every light bulb to LED lights to use less electricity! To make things ever better, The Chamber of Commerce's Gatlinburg Goes Green program has over 75% of local businesses working together to help keep the environment safe and clean. All of the hard work that's put into keeping the Great Smoky Mountains preserved for all time, has allowed the mass history of Gatlinburg to shine bright and take center stage.

Throughout the area of Gatlinburg, you can find many historic sites that are still standing today, including Martha Jane Huskey Ogle's cabin which was the first home to be built in Galtinburg in 1807,  which was then known as White Oak Flats. The name if Gatlinburg came much later. Martha Ogle was not the first one to come to White Oak Flats, it was her husband, William Ogle, who first came to the valley in 1803 and described Tennessee as "The Land of Paradise" to his family in South Carolina, east of the Smoky Mountains. He passed away in 1803, before he could bring his family to "The Land of Paradise". His widow settled in White Oak Flats in 1807 with her 2 daughters and 5 sons, along with her brother and his family. Martha's cabin was built out of logs that her late husband had collected for their future cabin, before he passed, becoming the first home built in the vally. Many years later, in 1856, a man named Radford C. Gatlin arrived in town. He was known as a very controversial man due to his political views and later got banished for those views, but not before he built the area's 2nd General Store and a Post Office. After a while, the area of White Oak Flats started being called Gatlinburg, which was the name of the post office. After Radford C. Gatlin was banished, his name stayed behind, labeling the once known valley of White Oak Flats, Gatlinburg. Once the U.S. Government purchased thousands of acres of land, which they stripped of most vegetation,  The Great Smoky Mountain's National Park was born, in the 1930's. It wasn't long after that tourism started booming! Throughout the years, Gatlinburg has grown into a four-season resort as well as a wonderful family and friend destination. Even though the tourist industry has been welcomed into Gatlinburg, Appalachian culture is still thriving today. More that 100 small shops and restaurants are tucked into an 8-mile loop in the Smoky Mountains who are proudly known as the Great Smoky Arts and Crafts Community. Established in 1937, Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community is the largest group of independent artisans in North America! Visitors are taken back in time when they visit this Artist's Paradise.

Doing some Tuesday Thinking

It's been raining alot for the past day or so and I'm crossing my fingers that it doesn't rain on July 4th! We have plans to go out of town to visit my fiances family and our kids are going to spend a couple nights with the grandparents. I would hate for it to be raining and ruin our firework plans. But if it rains  in Asheville, that don't mean that it will rain in Lenior/Hudson NC as well. Even though Hudson is only an hour or 2 away, weather can do some crazy things so we may be safe.... I guess we'll just have to wait and see!

Last Year for the fourth, my family went to Downtown Asheville and watched the firework show "One The Green". They had live music from local bands along with kids activites, even a blow up slide!! We all had alot of fun!!!

The girls were wanting to go downtown again this year but once they found out that we had plans to go see their Mawmaw, Granny and Grand-Paw... They were as happy as can be!! I've been hearing about this trip for weeks now and it's being brought up more often now that the days are slipping away! We're heading down to Hudson, NC around 10am on Thursday morning, since Alan has to work all day on Wednesday. It's going to be a busy day since we will be driving down, Hanging out with family, Watching Fireworks, and then driving home all in the same day! The kids will only be in the car for the trip down but I'm a bit worried that they will get homesick and want to come early. This will be their first long distance trip away from home without myself or their daddy staying with them. It's not just my girls that'll be staying with Alan's mom and step-dad, Mj will be staying too. He's the oldest but he don't come over to our house as much as we would like so sometimes we have a few bad days, it's mostly nights but mornings can be touch at times as well. At the moment, Jade, Loran and Mj are all excited about spending a couple nights with family so I hope they have a wonderful time and not cry for home bad enough that the trip had to be made early.

Friends of the Greenville Zoo

Did you know that the Greenville Zoo has a non-profit organization called "Friends of the Greenville Zoo"?

The Greenville Zoo is one of the top rated tourist attractions in the Upstate of South Carolina and one of my all time favorites! It's one of the closest Zoo's to my hometown of Asheville, NC and a top pick for alot of the locals! I love being able to visit all the animals throughout the Greenville Zoo's 14-acre facility that  features wildlife from around the world including giraffes, monkeys, giant tortoises, elephants and a variety of reptiles. (The Elephants are my favorite!)

The Zoo is open seven days a week, except on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

From 3/1 to 9/30, the Greenville Zoo extends their hours of operation from 9 AM to 5 PM, giving the guests an opportunity to take advantage of the cooler mornings during the Summer months of the year. Also, the zoo has added a third ticket booth to shorten the wait time for both groups and individuals. (Shorter wait time is ALWAYS a plus! Who wants to stand in line for an hour with 2 kids begging to see the monkeys?!)

Some that I've visited before and some that I haven't. Since I live outside Asheville, NC, I've been looking for attractions in and abouts my region. The Greenville Zoo is exactly the kind of attraction that I've been looking for. Ice Cream Social -- June 21, 2013

This year will be the first annual Ice Cream Social, with ice cream for sale in cones, sundaes and floats along with Kona Ice and many other frozen treats! I thought their would of been more tailgate and farmers markets in Madison County but I guess I was wrong, I've only been in Madison County a couple times and I wasn't paying much attention to my surroundings either time, so I don't remember much.

I will be adding more Madison listings soon from family farms to roadside stands etc. Keep an eye out!

While I was at the Community Fair at Enka Middle School, last week, I picked up an Asap Local Food Guide from a booth set up by the Appalachian State Collage. In the pamphlet, is a list of over 800 local listings of family farms and local food business!! I would like to share some of those listings with you. Buying food locally is wonderful! I love going to WNC Farmers Market! That's the only one on the list that I have visited personally and the people are wonderful. You can find some very nice people at Farmers Markets that you wouldn't necessarily meet or talk to in any other setting.
